Health and illness

Often, a friend will ask: “How are you today?” Usually there are no problems and you answer “Fine, thank you.” However, sometimes this may not be true, and you need to tell your friend that you don’t feel very well, or that you feel ill or sick. Sometimes you may get a cold or flu in the winter (often with a sore throat, cough and fever), and many people suffer from hayfever in the summer that causes them to sneeze.

Email or text message language

Communication is getting faster and faster. People use emails and text messages with only limited space for the text, so they use abbreviations to make the message shorter. There are so many of them, that sometimes it is hard to undrestand what the writer wanted to say.

Shopping for food in Prague has changed very much. When I first came here in 1993 the small local groceries didn’t carry much fresh fruit or vegetables, at least not in the winter. I remember my first visit to a local potraviny (as they call small groceries here). I was new in Prague and I had little money. I had been given a place to sleep by some Americans I had met on the train.

I arrived in the Czech Republic on the 24th of August in 2001. I travelled for eleven hours by plane from South Africa. I was born in the city of Cape Town. I could see Table Mountain from the window of my flat. It really does look like a table and when there are white clouds, they cover it like a tablecloth. You can hike up or down or take the special cable car. The views from the top are wonderful

Everyday activities

When I got married, my wife and I divided up the housework. I do the cooking and she does the washing up. I’m a much better cook than she is – don’t tell her I said that. We both work, but I usually get home earlier than she does. I find cooking relaxing and like trying new recipes.

The Internet

It seems like everyone’s talking about the Internet these days. But what is it really? For milions of people the Internet is a common thing like a fridge. For milions of people it is a useful tool like a hammer. But only a few people know that this device is younger than many of us. More than twenty years ago, the army network of ARPANET mutated in a global network connecting millions of computers worldwide now known as the Internet.

“Is anyone else from the office coming?”
